About the Author
Stephen Tobias grew up on New York City’s Lower Eastside, roller-skating in Washington Square Park and haunting the second-hand book stores on third avenue. He attended the same high-school as Tony Curtis and Zero Mostel and other’s who thrived on the culture of the city. He temporarily suspended his literary pursuits and has had a satisfying career as a family practice physician in Tacoma, Washington. He has returned to his first passion, fueled and enriched by the exhilarating and confounding human stories that were woven into his medical practice. His first Novel, “Outsider”, was a Nancy Pearl Finalist for best new fiction at the Pacific NW writers conference.
About The Book
OK, here’s the deal. A crow finds himself a choice spot, caging discarded scraps from a homeless guy who’s hustling handouts at Seattle’s Montlake Bridge. When the homeless guy discards a can of Vienna sausages, the crow, gluttonous as always, gets its beak caught in the half open can. Desperate to free itself, it bangs the can against the concrete. The frenzied blows to its head cause seizure-like elements and just before it passes out, the crow has the shocking revelation that it has lived before. Henry considers himself a man of deep faith, but his faith does not allow much room for this unanticipated metempsychosis. Both bemused and enchanted by his new avian identity, Henry discovers that his life is now filled with experiences and pleasures that are totally foreign to his prior human existence. Henry resolves to live his new life by being the best crow he can be, but a series of darkly comic events lead him irrevocably back to his last day as a human being and the violent event that led to this confounding slip of the cog that drives karma’s great wheel. Borrowing its title from the seminal work of William James but told as an exciting tail of avian and human misadventures: murder, redemption, and forgiveness, The Varieties of a Religious Experience is a deep meditation on how we define our place in the world and the mysteries at the heart of all our religious experiences.

JUMP ON THIS COSMIC FERRIS WHEEL
All aboard for a fast ride on Stephen Tobias's private cosmic ferris wheel, as he takes us on an awesome adventure. A jump from a bird's eye view of life ( as our main character starts out as a crow) and then into several other forms of life, all of them compelling, sends us to places we never knew existed. This author has done his research and shares it with us in the best possible way. You'll be hard pressed to put this book down until you're at the end and then you'll be looking for another story by this wordsmith who really knows how to "crack wise" and keeps you laughing and wandering and wondering, all at the same time!

loved it
I've been a fan of Mr. Tobias' writing style since the first book, Outsider. I love the uniformity of the writing texture and imagery. 'The Varieties of Religious Experience' presents a very creative and engaging interweave of the self and the reincarnated self. Hard to put the book down!

Intriguing, insightful, humorous, entertaining, thought provoking.
A truly enjoyable read. The way in which the author intertwines the human characters and their mirrored crow counterparts with humor and intellect, is brilliant! Being a Seattleite, I was amused by the story being set in and around this city.
The references to religious figureheads' abuse of power, and our search for purpose and truth, give cause for reflection on one's own spiritual conflicts and convictions.
This story certainly gave me an enhanced perspective and heightened appreciation for these intelligent, intriguing creatures. I will never again observe or be amused by crows in quite the same way.
Bravo, Stephen Tobias!

Engaging story
This inventive novel focuses on a person with a complex history who turns into a crow. Using images from many cultures—and a splash of humor—the author takes a fresh, bird’s-eye look at questions about identity and self-awareness. The result is a sweeping tale of one curious soul’s meandering search for equilibrium.

A must read book
For those of us who believe there are open communication channels between humans and wild birds, this is a must-read book. Straddling mundane everyday human life and the supernatural world, this book explores both. Grab a can of Vienna sausages and enjoy nibbling your way through this new book by Stephen Tobias whose realities are apparently limitless.

You don't have to be a bird brain to love this book.
Religion of any variety is not my thing. So when I realized an ordinary crow was telling his story which happened to include a rare but serious religious snafu, that changed everything. Masterfully written and exceedingly enjoyable. I highly recommend for most people and certain crows.

EVERY PAGE IS A DELIGHT!
“The Varieties of Religious Experience” draws you in to a fantastical world that is so compelling you don’t want to leave. It is at once disturbingly dark and yet screamingly funny with surprises on every page, especially in the final chapter which offers a delightful twist on the phrase “circle of life”. Read, enjoy, and reflect on everything this remarkable book has to offer.
